Inktober 2017 – Day Twenty Two

Inktober 2017

When starting this one I didn’t actually know what Grimm was or who the Brothers of Grimm were. So I had to google this one a lot too, but, worth it? Hopefully.

Day 22, Brothers of Grimm

So after a brief google of what this actually meant, I found a handy dandy definition for it.

“Family name of brothers Jacob Ludwig Carl (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Carl (1786–1859), German philologists and folklorists. In 1852, they inaugurated a dictionary of German on historical principles, which was eventually completed by other scholars in 1960. They also compiled an anthology of German fairy tales, which appeared in three volumes between 1812 and 1822.” From Here

I then did some follow up research on the fairy tales that the Grimm brother’s did. They did Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Of course they were all given names different in their tales, but I thought you’d know who they were more with those names rather than the originals.

As with where to go with this one, I wasn’t sure. I could maybe go along the tales route and do a character who has told many a lie. But like I’ve said in previous posts I haven’t really gotten too in depth about the plan for the whole secrets thing yet. And then I maybe thought about doing the book that would some way be involved. But after seeing the actual original stuff…. I’m okay thanks. So then it left me with essentially square one. So I maybe thought about a side character. One that maybe isn’t featured that often but their tales are. I then had to figure out how they could tell their “tales” without being seen that much, if at all. A radio show. Now, I know what you’re thinking, going from the time frame I’m setting this in, there may not be too much in the way of radio anymore. True, but the essence of it remains the same. Especially in a Museum. Handy right. So the original Brother’s of Grimm’s stories are always being reshaped and retold. So and exhibit could be a room, a library maybe, with lots of books, of all importance around history, with their stories, along with others, being read out. Maybe not displayed as some stories may be too gruesome. To go with that though  I’d probably be best doing another set design of more of the Museum.

I had another look around Pinterest with a few ideas in mind. Firstly, I wanted A LOT of books. I knew that there was no way I could get the whole room in an ink drawing, so maybe only a few of them.

But also wanted a cosy feel to the room, although it being open, I wanted a few warm and cosy aspects to it also.

I especially wanted the warm yellow ochre/ crimson red light within it somewhere. I know that’s hard to convey with water colour within these ink drawings, but I will add it to it when I rework it.

I also wanted to add a few quirks to this room as well. Something to remind visitors and onlookers that it’s no ordinary library and that it’s something much more but still within a Museum.Day 22 ref 6

I still wasn’t entirely sure how to approach this either until I saw this picture. This one gave me the idea on how to produce the images, instead of the butterflies, make it a hologram of some sort.

So now to combine them all together.

The Drawing

I started in a 4B and layered up the details gradually, using more and more pressure till I got the desired image. I had A LOT of trouble with proportions but it’s okay. It looked pretty cool, plus, despite it not looking entirely like what I had in my head, I can always rework it.

I then did the detail with a fine liner 0.3 and the rest in brush tip. I really like the effects the new pens have given the past few day challenges, so I will stick with it for now.

day 23 final
I added in the signs on how to use the books, because I always feel people need a helping hand with those sorts of things. Also, I reallllllly loved how the pages looked on the book with the red riding hood hologram and the 0.3 fine liner.

I liked the outcome (despite the red riding hood looking orange), and do intend to elaborate on it more when it comes into the story.

Until next time
