Inktober 2017 – Day Fourteen

Inktober 2017

I realllllllly got stuck on ideas for this. I really have no idea how I would’ve been able to link anything with this title to my characters in my story. The only thing I could think of was back to my holiday from summer earlier this year. My family, boyfriend and I went to Costa Rica for two weeks, and saw a variety of beautiful amazing creatures of all sorts. From toucans to sloths to owls to hummingbirds, the whole shebang, it was amazing and I’d love to go back. So thinking of how the museum holds many different places, I thought maybe one of my own photographs from my holiday would be good for this.

Day 14, The Animal Child

Since the title of the day was Animal Child, I thought I’d find a photo with either myself or one of the people I traveled with in it. So I started scrolling through my images from the holiday. Now I may be one of few on this, but when I go on holiday, I take my SLR and snap anything and everything I think has good lighting, good positions, good subject matter or just looks nice to take a picture of. So trust me when I said said scrolling through because with a 32GB SD card there were A LOT to look through. But for some reason there was a part of the holiday that stuck out a lot when I went through looking for pictures for this particular topic, which was the hummingbirds. Not only were they incredible to get in a clear shot with a short lens and bad lighting from stormy weather, but they were fast. The expressionist in me really wants to go mad with the line work in this one to replicate this. I gave in, I’m sorry, I had to, it was too good of an opportunity not to pass up on. This was the photo of mine that was one of the clearest and had what I wanted in it.

Blog ref 14

I really liked how the birds had minimal movement, with slight blur on the tail. It really manages to get the calm before the storm element, which I look for when doing expressionism. Plus if I had gone for another with blur of wings I thought it might’ve been too overwhelming and crowded in ink at least. For other images I’ve personally taken for reference visit here.

The only way I can think of linking this in is that this is in one of the spheres or another advertising campaign. But for now I’m going to have fun with the image.

The Drawing

Usually, like in the past challenge pictures I have done sketch to finalising and maybe colour. However, for this, like I’d usually do, I would just go for it. So just straight to ink. Good news, found my finer liner at 0.3 size, so not just angled tip from now on.

day 14 final

I think the head of the bird on the left did not go as planned, however in terms of proportion and positioning I think they’ve gone well. The beak could’ve been thinner though, but for a freehand sketch it went better than expected. I used a 3.0 fine liner for the hand and background detail, then went in with the angled bolder fine liner for the juxtaposition between layers of back and foreground. It worked well and I’m happy with the result. I also felt like I had a lot more freedom with this one with the whole sketchy rather than precise feel. Very much my preferred method.

Leaf Girl next, really not sure how that’s going to fit in either, but I’m sure I’ll think of something.

Sorry for out of sync posts, I’m trying to catch up as fast as possible to hopefully catch up before the challenge has ended, should be okay to do that, if all goes to plan.
